Appliance Repair FAQ — Your Questions, Answered
Whether your fridge stopped cooling or your dryer won’t heat, we know you have questions before booking a repair. Here are the answers Halifax homeowners ask us most often.
Cost & Pricing
How much does appliance repair cost in Halifax?
Most appliance repairs in Halifax cost between $150 and $400, depending on the appliance type, brand, and what’s wrong. Simple fixes like a dryer belt or fridge thermostat tend to be on the lower end. Compressor replacements or control board repairs run higher. We always provide a quote before starting any work — no surprises. For a full breakdown, see our appliance repair cost guide.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace my appliance?
As a general rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of the price of a new equivalent appliance, replacement usually makes more sense. But age matters too — a 3-year-old Samsung fridge with a $350 repair is worth fixing. A 15-year-old fridge with the same repair probably isn’t. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation. Read more in our fridge lifespan guide.
Do you charge a diagnostic fee?
Yes, there is a service call and diagnostic fee that covers the technician’s visit, inspection, and diagnosis. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is typically applied toward the total repair cost. We’ll always tell you upfront what the diagnostic fee is when you book.
Do you offer warranties on repairs?
Yes. All our repairs come with a warranty on both parts and labour. The exact warranty period depends on the type of repair and parts used. We’ll explain the warranty details before you approve any work.
Do you provide a quote before starting work?
Absolutely. After diagnosing the issue, our technician will give you a detailed quote before any repair begins. You’re never obligated to proceed. If you decide not to go ahead, you only pay the diagnostic fee.
Booking & Service
Do you offer same-day appliance repair in Halifax?
Yes — same-day service is available for most calls booked before noon. We understand that a broken fridge or washer can’t wait, so we do our best to get a technician to your door the same day you call. Contact us at (902) 904-5559 to check availability.
What areas in Halifax do you serve?
We serve the entire Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), including Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, Cole Harbour, Clayton Park, Spryfield, Fall River, Tantallon, and surrounding communities. If you’re in HRM, we can get to you.
How long does a typical appliance repair take?
Most repairs are completed in a single visit within 1 to 2 hours. Some repairs require ordering a specific part — in those cases, we’ll order the part and schedule a follow-up visit, usually within a few business days.
Do I need to be home during the repair?
Yes, someone 18 or older needs to be present during the service visit. The technician will need access to the appliance and may need to ask you questions about the issue. You don’t need to hover — just be available.
How do I book a repair?
You can book by calling (902) 904-5559 or through our online booking form. Let us know the appliance type, brand, and a brief description of the issue, and we’ll get you scheduled — often for the same day.
Appliance Troubleshooting
My fridge is running but not cold — what's wrong?
The most common causes are dirty condenser coils, a faulty evaporator fan, a broken thermostat, or a failing compressor. Start by checking that the vents inside the fridge aren’t blocked by food and that the temperature setting hasn’t been accidentally changed. If it’s still warm, it likely needs professional diagnosis. Learn more in our Samsung fridge troubleshooting guide or call us for fridge repair.
Why is my dishwasher not draining?
Common causes include a clogged filter, blocked drain hose, faulty drain pump, or a garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed. Check the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher first — food debris is the most frequent culprit. If cleaning the filter doesn’t help, book a dishwasher repair. We cover this in detail in our dishwasher draining guide.
My dryer runs but doesn't heat — is it fixable?
Yes, this is one of the most common dryer problems and it’s almost always fixable. The usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, faulty heating element, broken igniter (gas dryers), or a malfunctioning thermostat. These are straightforward repairs for an experienced technician. Book a dryer repair or call us at (902) 904-5559.
Why does my washing machine smell bad?
Front-load washers are especially prone to odours caused by mould and mildew buildup in the door gasket, detergent drawer, and drain. Using too much detergent, always washing in cold water, and leaving the door closed between loads all contribute. We wrote a full guide on how to fix a smelly washing machine. If cleaning doesn’t solve it, book a washer repair.
My oven won't heat past 300°F — what's the issue?
This is typically caused by a failing bake element, a faulty temperature sensor, or a malfunctioning control board. If the element is visibly damaged (cracked, blistering, or not glowing evenly), that’s your answer. Temperature sensor issues are also common and relatively inexpensive to fix. Book an oven repair and we’ll diagnose it same-day.
Is it safe to use an appliance that's making a strange noise?
It depends on the noise. A humming fridge or clicking stove igniter is usually normal. But grinding, banging, squealing, or buzzing sounds often indicate a failing motor, loose component, or electrical issue. If in doubt, stop using the appliance and call us. Running a malfunctioning appliance can turn a small repair into a big one — or a safety hazard.
Brands & Parts
Do you repair all appliance brands?
Yes — we repair 25+ major brands including Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Bosch, KitchenAid, Miele, Sub-Zero, Frigidaire, GE, Maytag, and more. See the full list on our brands we fix page.
Do you use original manufacturer parts (OEM)?
Whenever possible, yes. We use genuine OEM parts for repairs because they’re designed specifically for your appliance and come with manufacturer warranties. In some cases where OEM parts are discontinued or unavailable, we’ll use high-quality compatible parts and let you know beforehand.
Can you repair older or discontinued appliance models?
In most cases, yes. Our technicians have experience with both modern and older models. The main limitation is parts availability — if a part has been discontinued and no compatible replacement exists, repair may not be possible. We’ll always check parts availability before scheduling and let you know upfront.
Do you repair commercial appliances?
Our primary focus is residential appliance repair. For commercial equipment (restaurant-grade ovens, commercial freezers, industrial washers), we recommend contacting a commercial appliance specialist. However, high-end residential brands like Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador are fully within our expertise.
