How We Diagnose Refrigerator Problems

The visible symptom does not always identify the failed part. Depending on the refrigerator and the problem, the technician checks the systems most likely to affect cooling, drainage, ice production, and temperature control.

Cooling and airflow

Temperature readings, interior vents, evaporator airflow, and condenser airflow help separate an airflow problem from a control or component fault.

Defrost system

Frost patterns and the defrost heater, sensor or thermostat, and controls are checked when ice buildup blocks normal cooling.

Leaks and drainage

The defrost drain, water line, filter housing, inlet valve, and nearby connections are inspected according to where the water appears.

Door seal and alignment

Gasket condition, door alignment, and cabinet sealing are checked for warm-air leaks that can cause frost, condensation, or long run times.

Starting and controls

Depending on the model, testing may include the start relay, sensors, switches, wiring, and electronic controls related to the reported symptom.

Ice maker and dispenser

Water supply, fill valve operation, switches, sensors, and accessible mechanical components are checked when ice or dispensing stops.

If the fridge is getting warm

Keep the doors closed as much as possible and check the temperature with a refrigerator thermometer. Health Canada recommends keeping a refrigerator at 4 C (40 F) or lower.
